Mann+Hummel is a leading global company in filtration technology. One of the client's projects I was involved in as a lead product designer was to develop a remote-control web app to manage air filtration systems for business usage. The task was to build product hypotheses, receive and analyze client feedback, upgrade the feature lists, develop essential use cases and user flows, and through a series of product design iterations, deliver the final solution and component library for a Qlair control panel.
Hypothesis and Interviews
As a team we started with building hypotheses around clients' needs and frustrations with existing tools to validate in a series of interviews. Turned out, that some of the features, like a list of buildings or detailed filter status, were less useful, and some, like silent mode of air filter, filter grouping, installing via a wifi network, or flexible scheduling were not considered.
Features
We've developed a set of new features. As a client was limited in time and budget, we had to be very careful about our proposals. We had to cover existing use cases and invent some UX solutions to solve clients' pain points. We run some useful exercises and assessments to get to the most reasonable scope of features with the most value and least implementation efforts, considering the business profit as well.
Use Cases and User Flow
We divided the final scope of features into main use cases: Scheduling, Purifire Fleet Management, Smart Airflow, Replacement Service, Pollutant Statistics, and Report Generator and designed task flow for each of case separately. To be sure, that the cases work together as a product we've combined them into a main product user flow.
Wireframes,
Low and High Fidelity Mockups
Design phase was divided into three stages from Wireframing to Low and High fidelity prototypes. At each stage we were able to run a round of validation both internally and externally and improve the experience, working along on visual directions.
Design System
We've developed a design system with a wide range of components and brand elements. It simplified the design process and development handover. Moreover, it could help to use the product as a white-label solution for big enterprises, adjusting brand elements.
Final Solution
We've developed the web-app that included all the major features with well-structured information architecture, intuitive user experience, and a modern interface. Our solution turned out to be flexible enough for big enterprises to manage devices in several buildings and smaller offices of a few rooms. We've developed easy-to-use scheduling, remote control, dashboard with statistics, report generator, and on-demand filter purchasing.

Such a complex tool became quite simple to use without any additional onboarding or training and our approach was highly appreciated by the client.
Mobile
Despite the complexity of the tool to be used on desktop we also offered a simplified mobile version, for tracking the status of the device and setting up schedules, we also included some analytics mostly for overview purposes.
Learning and Findings
Product updates were successfully launched and introduced during Green Tech Fest in Berlin, getting positive feedback from customers and partners. Some features were presented with a specially designed TV-screen version of the product.
Marcel Schoch
Stas has created great UI/UX designs within multiple projects we collaborated on. He has a great sense in taking a customer perspective and creating designs that are informative and speak to the customer immediately. Stas was a part of the project team and helped us progressing our feature ideas from first user stories into final designs that could directly be implemented by the development team. Stas is very fast in capturing the use case for a needed design and coming up with new ideas in how to create features and digital products that people love to use.
